Utilization of straw as a source of income – production of animal bedding

Straw, a common by-product in agriculture, is often perceived as waste that goes to waste
and rots. However, there are many ways in which this straw can be used, not only as a valuable material for the production of animal bedding, but also as a new source of income for farms.

Farms around the world deal with large quantities of straw that are produced after harvesting cereals such as wheat, barley or oats. Traditionally, straw was mainly used as animal feed or for energy production in the form of biomass. However, with technological progress and market development, new possibilities for the use of straw have emerged.

One of such applications is the production of animal bedding. Bedding, that is, a layer of material spread on the floor inside buildings, has many benefits both for animals
and for farms. Bedding provides warmth, insulation, proper moisture levels and comfortable sleeping conditions for animals. Moreover, it effectively absorbs moisture, as well as controls odors
and maintains hygiene in animal facilities.

The animal bedding production industry is currently developing in many countries, and Poland has great potential for its growth. The laying hen population in Poland amounts to 51 million hens, which makes it the second largest in Europe (after Germany). This is a huge number of animals that require appropriate bedding, and currently the Polish sales market is not yet fully saturated.

Transforming straw into animal bedding can bring many benefits both for agricultural producers and for the environment. Firstly, farms and breeders can find a new source of income through the production and sale of bedding to other animal breeders. Thanks to this, they will be able to generate revenue throughout the year, regardless of seasonal conditions and harvest periods.

Secondly, using straw for bedding production reduces the amount of organic waste that goes to landfills or is burned, which can lead to the emission of harmful greenhouse gases. Instead, straw is processed into a value-added product that can be used in animal husbandry.

It is also worth noting that the production of bedding from straw is relatively inexpensive and easy to implement. The process can be automated, which speeds up production and reduces costs.

Conclusion

Straw, which until now has been perceived as agricultural waste, can constitute a valuable source of income for farms through the production of animal bedding. Using straw in this way not only allows for generating income throughout the year, but also reduces the amount of organic waste and contributes to environmental protection. Poland, with one of the largest laying hen populations in Europe, has enormous potential for the development of this sector. Therefore, it is worth considering investing in the production of animal bedding, which may bring benefits both to farmers and
to society as a whole.
