Grain extruders: how to improve feed quality and animal growth

Maximising feed quality is a priority in agriculture and livestock. In order to achieve this, many farms and processing plants are turning to modern solutions such as grain extruders. These extruders contribute to a significant improvement in the growth of animals by processing the grain into a foamed mass, which eventually takes the shape of small fingers.


One of the key processes carried out by extruders is the deactivation of anti-nutrients found in legumes. Thanks to this, the feed becomes more digestible and beneficial for animals, which translates into healthy and harmonious development. In addition, under the influence of high temperatures, disinfection of feed is carried out, eliminating harmful microflora, fungi and pathogenic bacteria. This is especially important for young animals and chicks, which are more susceptible to pathogens.


A key element of the extrusion process is the degree of pressure and high temperature. Thanks to the short-term influence of temperature (following in a fraction of a second), vitamins and other nutrients remain intact. Thanks to this, animals do not lose energy for digesting feed, which results in an increase in body weight and the amount of milk produced. The absorption of food by animal organisms is up to 90%.


Another advantage of extruded feeds is their exceptional physical stability. The finished product is great for transportation and storage, as it does not exfoliate and does not crumble. This means less loss and more efficiency.


The extrusion process is a precise operation, and the working part of the feed extruder consists of two chambers. The raw material is poured into the loading chamber, and then subjected to heat treatment at a temperature reaching 160-180 degrees under high pressure. Then the raw material "explodes". As a result of this process, the grain foams, increasing its volume several times. As a result, animals need less forage in the form of air sticks to get full nutritional satisfaction, compared to traditional pellets. 


In conclusion, grain extruders are a key tool in the process of improving feed quality and improving the efficiency of animal husbandry.
